About This Solar System Wall Hanging Pattern

This pattern shows how to crochet a solar system wall hanging with a rectangular base and detachable planets. It includes step-by-step instructions for the base, planet circles, hemispheres, color changes and final assembly. The planets are made as a circle plus a hemisphere and attached with Velcro for easy placement.

Solar System Wall Hanging Pattern crochet pattern - detailed view of completed project

You will use two hook sizes and fine cotton yarn to create crisp, small amigurumi planets. The pattern includes tips for beads, rings and final mounting on wooden sticks.

Why You'll Love This Solar System Wall Hanging Pattern

I absolutely love this pattern because it turns simple crochet into a playful, decorative piece that tells a story. I enjoy combining small amigurumi techniques with flat crochet to create a tactile wall hanging that kids and adults both enjoy. The removable planets make it interactive and easy to change composition on the base. I also love that the pattern teaches color-carrying and hiding yarn tails while working hemispheres.

Switch Things Up

I love how easy it is to customize this pattern: swap yarn colors to make pastel planets or bright primary colors for a playful look.

I often change yarn weight and hook size to create a chunky version of the planets for a larger, softer wall hanging.

I sometimes add embroidered features or beaded constellations to the base for extra sparkle and texture.

I recommend experimenting with felt cutouts or tiny crocheted accessories (like a rocket or moon) to add narrative elements to the scene.

If you want movable planets, use stronger sewing snaps instead of Velcro for a lower-profile attachment.

I also enjoy making a set of matching mobiles for a nursery using the same planet patterns but smaller hooks and thinner yarn.

For Saturn's rings, try different bead sizes or use a crocheted chain looped with seed beads for a delicate look.

I sometimes make a night-sky version by stitching small sequins or using glitter glue dots to mimic distant stars on the base.

To personalize, stitch initials or a date onto the back of the base before finishing so it becomes a lasting keepsake.

Don't be afraid to mix textures β€” cotton for crisp stitch definition, a touch of acrylic for bright colors, or mΓ©lange yarn for soft, variegated effects.

Common Mistakes & How to Fix Them

βœ— Skipping the 3rd chain when starting the base will change the stitch count; always start working in the 3rd chain from hook to reach 63 stitches. βœ— Not counting rows on the base can produce an uneven hanging length; mark every 10th row with a stitch marker and measure regularly to maintain 42 cm height. βœ— Failing to carry yarns on the wrong side when doing Earth hemispheres will create visible floats; carry all unused yarns on the wrong side and secure at color change points. βœ— Overstuffing the hemispheres makes the join lumpy and hard to sew; stuff gradually with small amounts of fiberfill and shape as you go for a smooth sphere. βœ— Not securing Velcro properly can cause planets to fall off; glue or sew the velcro halves firmly and ensure the sharp half is fixed to the base for long-term hold.

β€” The base :

Info :

Work in back and forth rows with a 3.0 mm crochet hook. Begin each row with a turning chain.

Instruction :

Chain 65, start working in the 3rd chain from hook:

Round 1 :

63 sc, turn (63)

Round 2-107 :

1 t-ch, 63 sc, turn (63)

Info :

The finished wall hanging using the materials stated in this pattern is 28*42 cm. (The width and size could be different due to the different crochet density.)

Section :

To attach the crocheted piece to your branch/wooden stick, you will need to crochet the loops. We need to make three loops from above, below, in the center, and on the edges. If you use the wooden stick of a similar diameter, then work as follows:

Round 1 :

9 sc, turn (9)

Round 2-11 :

1 t-ch, 9 sc, turn (9)

Info :

Leave a long yarn tail for sewing. If you use the branch of a different diameter, then make the required number of rows. Try on if needed. Do not sew now. Complete assembling the base.

Assembly Instructions

  • Sew hemisphere to its matching circle using the long tail left from the circle; stuff the hemisphere lightly before completing the join and secure with small, tight stitches.
  • Glue or sew the soft half of the round Velcro to the inside of the planet hemisphere and glue or sew the sharp half to the base in desired positions so planets can be attached and removed.
  • Arrange and pin planets onto the base to choose positions (use photos as reference), then sew the Velcro sharp halves to the base or glue them, ensuring they line up with planets.
  • Thread beads for Saturn rings on monofilament and sew the ring onto Saturn (horizontally) or Uranus (vertically) using a beading needle; secure ends inside the planet.
  • Insert the two wooden sticks through the three loops at the top and bottom of the base, then fasten the hanging cord to the top stick for wall mounting.

Important Notes

  • πŸ’‘Use stitch markers to keep track of your rows and shaping, especially when carrying colors and working hemispheres in back-and-forth rows.
  • πŸ’‘Carry unused yarn on the wrong side during color changes and secure floats occasionally to avoid tangles and visible strands on the right side.
  • πŸ’‘Stuff the planets gradually to maintain a smooth spherical shape; overstuffing will make sewing the two parts together difficult and lumpy.
  • πŸ’‘Test-fit wooden sticks and loops before sewing down the base to ensure the sticks slide through easily and the hanging sits straight.

FAQs

What size will the finished piece be?

The finished wall hanging using the materials stated in this pattern is approximately 28 x 42 cm, but width and size may vary by crochet tension.

Can I use different yarn weights for this pattern?

Yes, you can substitute yarn weights, but this will change the final size; if you use thicker yarn, increase the hook size and adjust loop counts for the base.

Do I need prior crochet experience for this pattern?

This pattern is rated intermediate and requires familiarity with single crochet, increases, decreases, working in spirals and changing colors while carrying yarn.

How long does this project typically take to complete?

Most crafters will take around 12-15 hours to complete the base and all planets, though time may vary depending on experience and the number of decorative details.

How are the planets attached to the base?

Planets are attached using round Velcro straps (hook and loop) sewn or glued to the planet hemisphere and the base; you can also use sewing snaps instead of Velcro.
