About This Summertime Cuties Pattern

This pattern teaches you to make cute bucket hats in three sizes with playful designs: frog, bee, strawberry and chick. Each hat base is created with simple increasing rounds and decorated with small crocheted features for personality. The instructions include rounds for eyes, cheeks, beaks, stems, leaves, and wing details so you can finish each hat beautifully. Colors and sizes are easy to customize to make unique gifts.

Clear row-by-row instructions guide you from the hat base through all decorative bits and assembly. Use common worsted yarn and a 4.0mm hook to achieve the sample sizes and adjust as needed.

Why You'll Love This Summertime Cuties Pattern

I absolutely love this pattern because it lets me combine simple crochet techniques with playful decorating to create charming wearable pieces. I enjoy how quickly a hat base grows with just a few increase rounds, then watching little faces and details bring each hat to life. I love that these designs are very customizable β€” I often change colors or make mini variations as gifts. Sewing on the seeds, eyes, or cheeks is my favorite part because it makes each hat feel hand-crafted and unique.

Switch Things Up

I love how easily you can customize these hats just by changing yarn colors, so I often swap shades to make pastel or neon versions of the same design.

If you want a chunkier look, I change yarn weight and move up a hook size to make a thicker, cozier hat that works well in colder weather.

To make a mini version for keychains, I use a thinner yarn and a smaller hook and reduce the increase rounds to shrink the crown.

I sometimes embroider tiny details like eyebrows or freckles instead of crocheting separate pieces to give a flatter, simpler finish.

Try adding surface slip stitch stripes for the bee instead of changing yarn every row if you prefer less sewing and fewer ends to weave in.

For the strawberry, I like to replace pearl bead seeds with tiny French knots using embroidery thread to add texture and shine.

Swap the chick's beak and cheeks for felt pieces if you're making these for kids and want a quicker, no-sew option for beginners.

If you want posable elements, insert a short length of craft wire into stems or leaves and wrap with yarn before sewing into the hat.

I also enjoy making coordinating setsβ€”matching booties or a small toy using the same colors makes for a lovely gift box.

Play with placement of the eyes and cheeks to create different expressions; moving features slightly changes the personality of each hat dramatically.

Common Mistakes & How to Fix Them

βœ— Skipping stitch count checks during increase rounds leads to incorrect crown sizes; count your stitches at the end of each increase round and fix any extra or missing increases immediately. βœ— Not pulling the magic ring tail tight can leave a loose center hole; when using a magic ring, pull the tail firmly to close the center before joining the round. βœ— Stuffing cheeks or small features too firmly will distort their shape when sewn on; stuff lightly and shape gradually, tightening the tail after stuffing to flatten as needed. βœ— Changing yarn weight without adjusting hook size will alter final hat circumference and drape; swatch in the round and adjust hook size to match the gauge before starting. βœ— Not using a stitch marker to mark the start of rounds causes missed or extra stitches; place a marker at the first stitch of every round and move it after each round to keep your place.

β€” Hat Bases :

Info :

Grab the color needed for your desired hat! I will let you know throughout the rows which size stops where! ch2 does not count as a stitch at any point in this pattern. See below for row variations regarding bee sizes and stripe rows.

Info :

Increase rows: To set up the hat we will be using a magic ring OR a ch 3 and slst into the first ch made. You will be working into the center of this ring. FOR LARGE: If you have a smaller head to make for (my head is small), only add 12 dc and remove 1 repeat from each row. This will change your total stitch count.

Row 1 :

ch 2, 13dc into the ring (Pull yarn tail tight if magic ring was used). slst into the first dc made. -13dc Total.

Row 2 :

ch2, dc inc into each stitch around and join. -26dc Total

Row 2 :

ch2, [*dc inc, dc 2*] until all stitches are filled. Join.

Row 3 :

ch2, [*dc, dc inc*] until all stitches are filled. Join and tie off.

Info :

Now is the time to weave in any ends from your hat. You could always finish your hat here if you want a solid color or to decorate on your own, but the main part of this pattern is in the decorating I have done!

Info :

The small hats have a circumference of 13-14 inches and is a good size for your typical newborn! The medium sized hats have a circumference of 18-19 inches and will fit a 1-3 Year old child. The Large size has a circumference of 20.5-22 inches and has fit every adult I have tried it on thus far. Keep in mind that the nature of crochet fabric means it will stretch and have a bit of give to it. Feel free to try on the hat and decide if you need a deeper crown fit. Just add more of the crown row. Edging rows do not affect how well the hat will sit on your head but may slightly obstruct your view if you make the hat too deep.

Info :

Bee color changes: Small hat: Row 1-3 Yellow. Row 4 Black. Row 5 Yellow. Row 6 Black. Row 7 Yellow. Row 8 Black. Row 9 Yellow. Row 10 Black. Edging rows in yellow.

Info :

For adding the frog's mouth I had just slip stitched through the hat. You can also just sew it on. It takes me a few attempts for every frog mouth to sit right! Again all the sewing is down to preference, besides how the eyes are sewn together that is! Stuff the stem with leftover yarn or fiber fill before sewing it on. I tend to sew in and out of the stitches rather than out and around them, just to keep it clean. For the strawberry hat seeds I just use matching thread doubled and sew them on wherever I think looks good. I tie each one individually and don't weave in the thread. After trying to use yarn for the seeds.. just trust me when I say this is easier and looks more tidy! Feel free to contact me on etsy if you have any questions and make sure to use my photos as reference!

Assembly Instructions

  • Sew the decorative pieces to the hat by placing the parts where you want them and pinning or holding in place; use the long tails left from tie offs to whipstitch the pieces securely to the hat.
  • For frog eyes, stack the eye circles (pupil, iris, eye back) and sew them together before attaching; sew the finished eye pair onto the crown and secure with multiple passes for stability.
  • Attach cheeks and beak by aligning them symmetrically on the crown, flattening the beak or cheek as instructed, and sew through the hat fabric to anchor each piece firmly.
  • Sew strawberry seeds using doubled thread and a small needle, tying off each seed individually and leaving the thread tails un-woven for a tidy finished look.
  • Position stems and leaves on top of the strawberry hat, stuff the stem lightly, and sew through the hat crown into the leaf base to secure the piece so it stands upright.

Important Notes

  • πŸ’‘Use stitch markers to mark the beginning of each round, especially during increases and crown rows, to avoid losing your place.
  • πŸ’‘Check your gauge (4 dc and 2 rows per inch) by making a swatch worked in the round and adjust hook size if necessary to achieve the correct fit.
  • πŸ’‘Stuff small pieces lightly and evenly to avoid distorting their shape; tighten the tail after stuffing to flatten cheeks and keep pieces neat.

These Summertime Cuties are designed to brighten any day with playful faces and bright colors. Try each design in different yarn shades and sizes to build a whole collection of hats. They make adorable gifts for babies, toddlers, and grown-ups alike. πŸ§ΆπŸŒžπŸ“
